Elvis Muigua claimed the 2026 NCBA Nyanza Hippo Pot title in Kisumu.
Elvis Muigua finishes one under par at Nyanza Golf Club to claim the 2026 title and strengthen his third-place position in the national amateur standings.
Elvis Muigua won the 2026 NCBA Nyanza Hippo Pot on Sunday, finishing two shots clear at Nyanza Golf Club in Kisumu. The Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club player completed three rounds in 209 strokes, one under par.
Muigua topped a field of 66 amateurs in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series event. His victory also gave the tournament a new champion after John Lejirma’s three consecutive titles.
However, Lejirma did not return to defend his crown after turning professional. The Railway golfer’s move to the paid ranks left the title open to a new winner.
Fast start shapes Nyanza Hippo Pot victory
Muigua established a strong position on Friday with an opening round of 66, four under par. He then added a level-par 70 on Saturday before closing with a three-over-par 73.
Despite that higher final-round score, his early work proved enough to secure the title. Kakamega Sports Club’s Cedric Konzolo finished second on 211, one over par, after rounds of 70, 71 and 70.
Muigua said he had targeted a strong opening round to position himself well for the remaining rounds. He also credited patience, focus and avoiding unnecessary mistakes when the competition became difficult.
Meanwhile, William Odek of Nyali Golf and Country Club took third place on 212, two over par. He recorded rounds of 71, 71 and 70 to finish one stroke behind Konzolo.
Rono and Karioki share fourth place
Golf Park Golf Club’s Josphat Rono and Geoffrey Karioki of Kisii Sports Club tied for fourth. Both finished on 213, three over par, although they took different routes to that total.
Rono returned rounds of 70, 71 and 72. Karioki, meanwhile, began with a 69 before adding scores of 73 and 71.
Further down the leaderboard, Kinyara Golf Club’s Joseph Kasozi and Golf Park’s Amos Odongo shared sixth place. They each completed the tournament on 216, six over par.
Kasozi closed with a 70, while Odongo finished with a 75 after earlier rounds of 70 and 71.
Ranking boost and opportunities for local golfers
The victory also strengthened Muigua’s hold on third place in the KAGC standings, with 1,074.50 points. Muthaiga Golf Club’s Jay Sandhu leads on 1,535 points, ahead of Nakuru Golf Club’s John Kamaisi on 1,133.
Beyond the leaderboard, Nyanza Golf Club captain Julius Omollo highlighted the tournament’s value for developing local talent. He said the series gives local golfers a platform to test themselves against experienced players and assess their progress.
Omollo also pointed to opportunities for caddies who have developed their golfing skills while working at the club. He said the event allowed them to demonstrate those skills and show their progress in the game.
