Kenyan inline freestyle skater Kevin Kiarie Ruhiu has withdrawn from the 2026 World Skate Games in Asunción, Paraguay. The reigning African champion cited a lack of government and institutional support for his decision.

Kiarie had qualified for the global competition after recording impressive results on the continental stage. However, funding disputes and unresolved administrative issues disrupted his preparations.

Kiarie Raises Funding Concerns

The skater has questioned the handling of his medal awards and other funds linked to his international achievements. According to Kiarie, he expected KSh 2.75 million based on government medal-award rates.

He says he received only KSh 750,000, leaving KSh 2 million outstanding. Kiarie has also disputed claims surrounding an additional KSh 870,000 allegedly transferred to his personal account.

He maintains that he did not receive the money. The dispute has added to his concerns about the support available to athletes in emerging sports.

Athlete Relied on Public Support

Kiarie also turned to Kenyans, friends and family to finance several international trips. At one point, he reportedly used money intended for his daughter’s education to support his sporting ambitions.

Public fundraising efforts later raised more than KSh 340,000 towards his Paraguay trip. However, visa complications and the lack of official support eventually derailed his plans.

Kiarie Ends 2026 Season

The withdrawal means Kiarie’s 2026 competitive season has now come to an early end. His situation has also renewed questions about funding for athletes outside Kenya’s traditional sporting disciplines.

Kiarie’s case highlights the financial challenges facing athletes who represent Kenya on the international stage. Despite his African Championship success, securing adequate support remained a major challenge.
