Nurses at KUTRRH have issued a 21-day strike notice over unresolved workplace grievances.
The nurses’ union has given hospital management 21 days to address employment terms, unpaid gratuities and a pending collective bargaining agreement.
Nurses have issued a KUTRRH strike notice over unresolved workplace grievances, threatening a walkout on November 9, 2026. The Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) has given hospital management 21 days to address their concerns.
The union says members will withdraw their labour from 12:01am if management fails to resolve the outstanding issues. The notice concerns nurses at Kenyatta University Teaching Referral and Research Hospital, which provides specialised healthcare, teaching and research services.
KUTRRH strike notice sets out employment demands
The union wants the hospital to confirm locum nurses to permanent and pensionable terms. It also seeks payment of outstanding gratuities and standardisation of locum rates.
In addition, KNUNM wants management to finalise a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The union says these grievances remain unresolved, prompting its decision to issue the notice.
The demands cover both employment security and remuneration. However, the announced walkout remains conditional on management failing to address the concerns within the notice period.
Union warns of restrictions on admissions
If the strike proceeds, the union says nurses will maintain essential services only for existing patients. It also warns that there will be no new admissions during the industrial action.
The proposed walkout could therefore disrupt access to services at the hospital. The union has given management the notice period to resolve the dispute and avert that disruption.
The statement announcing the strike notice did not include a response from KUTRRH management. Meanwhile, the threat adds to continuing labour disputes in Kenya’s health sector over employment terms, pay and healthcare workers’ welfare.
