Authorities have identified the victim in the Lake Mead mystery more than two years after discovering his remains inside a metal drum. They named him as Edward Buddy Lelburian Jackson, who they believe died in the 1980s.
Jackson suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Investigators believe he was in his mid-to-late 50s when he died, but his killer remains unknown.
Genetic genealogy helps resolve Lake Mead mystery
Investigators used genetic genealogy to trace Jackson’s surviving relatives and establish his identity. His remains emerged in May 2022, when severe drought lowered water levels at the Nevada reservoir.
As the water receded, it exposed the corroded metal drum containing his remains. Lake Mead is North America’s largest reservoir.
Jackson had lived in several states, including Arkansas, Utah and California. Relatives described him as someone who moved frequently and rarely maintained contact.
Investigators believe that pattern may explain why nobody reported him missing. However, identifying him has not yet resolved the circumstances surrounding his death.
Detectives find no evidence pointing to mob involvement
The discovery prompted speculation about a possible organised crime connection. However, homicide detectives said the current evidence did not point to mob involvement.
Jackson also had no known gambling history or established ties to Las Vegas. Authorities continue to investigate who killed him and why.
