Education CS Julius Ogamba says the ministry will administer exams to seven hospitalised candidates and five others in correctional facilities.

The Education Ministry has arranged special examinations for 12 Moyale KCSE candidates following insecurity along the Kenya-Ethiopia border. Seven candidates suffered injuries, while authorities arrested five others, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said.

Stray bullets from fighting across the Ethiopian border reached Sessi Mixed Secondary School and St Mary’s Mixed Secondary School. The incident disrupted learning and examinations at the two institutions in Marsabit County on Monday.

In a statement after the incident, Ogamba said the seven injured learners were receiving hospital treatment. Meanwhile, the five arrested candidates were in correctional facilities.

Ogamba said the ministry would deliver and administer Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations to candidates in both settings. The arrangements aim to ensure all 12 can sit their papers despite the disruption.

Officials have also relocated two examination centres following security concerns in the border town. The changes come as candidates prepare for compulsory subjects during a key stage of the national examinations.

Ogamba condemned the clan clashes along the Kenya-Ethiopia border and pledged government support to keep examinations running smoothly. Fighting across the border had spilled over into Kenya’s Moyale area, affecting the schools.

He also urged members of the public to report examination fraud or malpractice to the Kenya National Examinations Council. The council’s toll-free reporting numbers are 0800721410 and 0800724900.
