A Nairobi court has extended detention for three more suspects connected to a violent church invasion. Specifically, the Kibera Law Court officially granted police 10 working days to detain George Omondi Otieno, Effenburg Wanyama Khisa and Melvin Alumasa Bwani.

Furthermore, Kibera Magistrate Stella Atambo allowed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to hold them at Kibera Police Station to finalise investigations.

What Happened at All Saints Cathedral

The incident that triggered this investigation was alarming in scale. Specifically, on Friday, June 12, 2026, approximately 200 youths on motorcycles stormed a post-budget review meeting at the church grounds.

Furthermore, they disrupted the gathering and robbed participants. Consequently, police officers were forced to fire warning shots to restore order.

The Charges They Face

Investigators believe this attack was not random. Specifically, Investigating Officer Odhiambo Weke informed the court that preliminary findings link the suspects to a criminal group known as “Chini ya Mnazi,” based in Mathare North

Disturbing Political Claims

The most concerning element of this case involves political exploitation. Specifically, arrested individuals claimed they were hired for Ksh2,000 each by a sitting Nairobi MP.

Furthermore, they allege they were told they were disrupting an opposition meeting linked to impeached former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Where the Case Stands Now

The investigation continues to expand. Specifically, these three suspects join two others arrested earlier, bringing the total number of people currently held over the church invasion to five.
