EAC Reaffirms Support for Somalia Amid Somaliland Tensions
Community Breaks Silence
The East African Community (EAC) has reaffirmed support for Somalia amid growing tensions with Somaliland. Moreover, the statement followed Israel’s recognition of Somaliland as an independent state.
Official Statement Released
On December 28, the EAC secretariat declared Somalia a single sovereign state under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Additionally, the community aligned its position with the African Union’s stance on Somalia’s sovereignty.
Treaty and Borders Recognized
The EAC cited its founding treaty, recognizing Somalia’s borders inherited at independence. Therefore, it rejected any attempts to alter Somalia’s territorial integrity.
Israel Urged to Respect Sovereignty
The EAC demanded Israel respect Somalia’s unity and sovereignty. Furthermore, it urged all stakeholders to act within international legal frameworks.
Regional Leaders Show Solidarity
Hours earlier, President Mohamud held phone calls with East African leaders, including Kenya’s William Ruto and Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni. Consequently, the leaders assured Mogadishu of their continued support despite rising tensions.
Somaliland Celebrates Recognition
Meanwhile, celebrations erupted in Hargeisa after Israel’s declaration. Citizens of Somaliland termed the recognition diplomatic and claimed independence from Somalia.
African Union and Global Response
The African Union dismissed Israel’s move, warning of regional security threats. Similarly, Arab and Islamic states condemned Netanyahu’s actions as violations of international law.
Infrastructure and Security Challenges
Somalia continues strengthening its borders and institutions amid external pressures. Thus, the EAC statement signals regional unity against destabilizing actions.
The EAC’s declaration intensifies debate over Somaliland’s recognition. Ultimately, it underscores regional commitment to Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
