How are HIV patients coping with the Crisis?

Preparations in place ahead of World AIDS day celebration on 1st December, 2025.

The withdrawal of foreign aid to HIV patients has led to a significant crisis. Reduction in the availability of essential medicines and public health interventions. Threatening treatment continuation and prevention programmes. The critical situation has prompted calls for immediate action where patients have petitioned the government to include care under Social Health Authority.

The crisis has exposed vulnerabilities in the healthcare system especially those relying on international donors. The change comes following the withdrawal of USAid funding. For decades it has supported Kenya’s HIV programme by providing antiretroviral drugs and testing supplies.

How will the HIV patients survive the crisis?

Patients have been forced to make frequent visits to hospitals leading to emotional strains and increasing their spendings. The shortage of ARVs has not only affected treatment but also testing and monitoring. Number of patients defaulting on their during drugs this crisis is increasing due to lack of services and food.

Several communities and initiatives have come together to commemorate the day.

Kenya has made significant progress in its HIV response, with 98% of adults living with HIV receiving treatment by the end of 2023, and 97% achieving viral suppression. New HIV infections have dropped by 83% over the past decade, while AIDS-related deaths have decreased by 64%.

What is the plan ahead?

Former CS Health Dr. Barasa last year reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all citizens, especially those in underserved areas.

Kenya’s strategic plan to achieve a self-reliant HIV crisis response by 2030 in highlighting the importance of continued innovation and improvements in the health system.

One key development in solving the crisis is the adoption of long-acting injectable cabotegravir for HIV prevention. Transforming the country’s approach to care.
