Government Begins Nationwide Distribution of Subsidised Fertiliser

The Kenyan government has launched nationwide distribution of subsidised fertiliser ahead of the April planting season.
Moreover, the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed over three million 50-kilogram bags will reach key agricultural regions.

Flag-Off Ceremony in Mombasa
On January 13, Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh flagged off the fertiliser subsidy programme in Mombasa.
Additionally, Ronoh stated the initiative aims to prevent delays in planting and cultivation of essential crops like maize.

He confirmed fertiliser dispatch to regions including Nyamira, Kisii, Bungoma, Kakamega, and the North and South Rift.

Government’s Broader Fertiliser Plan
The three million bags form part of a larger plan to distribute 12.5 million bags in 2026.
Furthermore, the programme seeks to enhance food security and strengthen agricultural productivity nationwide.

President William Ruto earlier announced the expanded distribution would double the fertiliser supply compared to 2025.
He emphasized that every ward across Kenya will benefit from affordable agricultural inputs.

Affordable Prices for Farmers
Registered farmers will access fertiliser at a subsidised price of KSh2,500 per 50-kilogram bag.
Moreover, this marks a significant reduction from the KSh7,000 price recorded in 2022.

Distribution will occur through National Cereals and Produce Board depots, satellite stores, and authorised agrovet outlets.
This approach reduces transport costs and ensures farmers receive inputs closer to their farms.

Impact on Food Security
The fertiliser subsidy programme is central to Kenya Kwanza’s agricultural transformation strategy.
Additionally, the government projects maize production will rise from 44 million bags to 70 million bags.

Since its introduction, subsidized fertiliser has lowered prices, boosted food production, and reduced maize flour costs.
Ultimately, the initiative strengthens Kenya’s food security and supports farmers during the long rains planting season.
