Kenya Ranked Among Top English-Speaking Nations in Africa

Kenya Secures Third Place in Africa
A new report ranked Kenya third among Africa’s best English-speaking nations. Moreover, Kenya outperformed Nigeria, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Morocco in the 2025 English Proficiency Index (EPI).

Education First Report Findings
Education First (EF) released the English Proficiency Index of 2025. Additionally, the survey assessed adult English skills across 123 countries and regions worldwide.

Global Participation in Survey
Over 2.2 million participants completed the EF Skills Evaluation Technology (EF SET). Consequently, 46 percent were male, while 54 percent were female, with an average age of 26.

Africa’s Top Performers
South Africa ranked first, followed by Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Zambia. Furthermore, English remains widely used in government, education, and media across these nations.

Kenya’s Historical Context
English is widely spoken in Kenya due to colonial history. Therefore, the language was established as the official dialect during British rule.

Other African Rankings
Nigeria, Ghana, and Uganda ranked fifth, sixth, and seventh. Meanwhile, Ethiopia, Tunisia, and Morocco completed the continent’s top ten list.

Importance of English Proficiency
The report emphasized English as vital for global economic engagement. Moreover, proficiency signals adaptability to international standards in knowledge-based economies.

Kenya’s Global Position
Globally, Kenya ranked 19th in English proficiency. Additionally, the Netherlands, Croatia, Australia, and Germany secured the top four positions.

Other Global Leaders
Norway, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, Belgium, and Slovakia also featured in the top ten globally. Ultimately, Kenya’s strong ranking highlights its growing global competitiveness.
