NMK Announces New Museum Fees

On April 7, 2026, the National Museums of Kenya announced revised admission fees. The new rates take effect on May 7, 2026.

The changes aim to address a funding gap that has grown since the last review over a decade ago. Additionally, the government encourages state corporations to become financially self-sustaining. Currently, exchequer allocations mainly cover salaries, leaving NMK to fund operational costs from its own revenue.

Why the Fee Changes Were Needed

Firstly, operational costs have risen sharply. Electricity, security, insurance, and facility maintenance now cost significantly more than ten years ago.  High inflation and a weakening Kenyan Shilling have added further pressure.

Secondly, heritage conservation competes with critical sectors such as education, health, and defense for public funds. NMK must therefore generate internal revenue to maintain its sites.

Finally, several facilities underwent upgrades. Museums like Karen Blixen and Tambach now provide enhanced visitor experiences, making updated fees necessary.

Benefits to Visitors

Although fees have increased, they deliver clear benefits:

  • Preserve Heritage: Revenue supports conservation of artifacts at sites such as Fort Jesus.
  • Enhance Experiences: Funds modernize galleries, add new exhibitions, and improve security and utilities.
  • System Upgrades: Temporary closures allowed technology improvements for better visitor access.
  • Continued Access: Stable finances ensure museums remain open and maintained for the public.Museum
