Police Block Major Roads Ahead of Saba Saba Commemoration

The National Police Service has locked down access to the Nairobi Central Business District by erecting multiple security checkpoints and roadblocks on all major entry highways on July 7, 2026. Specifically, this operation has left thousands of commuters stranded and forced many to walk long distances to work as matatus are blocked or withdrawing from routes. Furthermore, the heavy deployment follows a directive to prevent anticipated Saba Saba demonstrations.

Every Major Route Into the CBD Is Blocked

The lockdown covers all major arteries into the city. Specifically, complete blockades and diversions are active at Allsops, Roysambu, Kasarani and Pangani on Thika Road. Furthermore, barricades near the Kangemi flyover have shut down Waiyaki Way from the west.

Police have diverted traffic on Mombasa Road and Lang’ata Road at the Nyayo Stadium junction and Bunyala roundabout. Officers have also blocked Kiambu Road near the DCI Headquarters.

Meanwhile, police have heavily deployed along Jogoo Road near City Stadium roundabout and Hamza. Authorities have also sealed Ngong Road around the City Mortuary roundabout.

Why Police Have Shut Down the City

Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud declared the planned Saba Saba marches illegal. Specifically, he stated that authorities received no formal protest notification ahead of the demonstrations.

Furthermore, while private vehicles are undergoing strict screenings at all entry points, only essential services like ambulances are being granted smooth access into the city centre.

What This Means for Nairobi Today

The disruptions have immediately affected thousands of Nairobi residents. Many matatus have suspended trips to the CBD, leaving commuters stranded across the city.

Consequently, thousands of workers are walking long distances to reach their workplaces. The transport disruption has also delayed businesses and disrupted normal economic activity.
