Police Officers Cry Foul Over Missing Allowances After Madaraka Day

Several Kenya Police officers deployed to Homa Bay for the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations are crying foul. This is in response to what they describe as blatant underpayment and unequal treatment.

The officers were mobilized as early as May 28 to prepare for the national event, which was held on June 1. The officers say they were subjected to grueling daily parade rehearsals. Furthermore, logistical preparations and ceremonial duties under tight schedules and long hours.

However, after weeks of service, they claim they were handed a flat cash payout of just Ksh 10,000. This is far below the expected allowance. According to the officers, standard government rates for such deployments typically include a daily night-out allowance of Ksh 4,300, which for 32 days would amount to over Ksh 130,000.

“We were only given 10K in cash, with no explanation, no breakdown, and no official communication,” said one officer who requested anonymity. “Meanwhile, colleagues from other uniformed services reportedly walked away with allowances ranging between Ksh 25,000 to 35,000.”

The police officers argue that the disparity in compensation has left them feeling demoralized and disrespected, especially given the national significance of the event and the high level of discipline and commitment required.

They are now calling on the Interior Ministry and National Police Service Commission to investigate the matter. Additionally, they need to ensure fairness and transparency in how officers are treated during such assignments.

“We’re not asking for favors,” added another officer. “We’re simply asking to be treated with the same dignity and fairness as other service members.”

As of now, no official statement has been issued by the authorities in response to the allegations.
