Rapid Rescue After Young Woman Climbs 40-Meter Power Pylon

Residents of Galilee in Gatundu North watched in shock on Tuesday as a young woman climbed a high-voltage Kenya Power pylon. Witnesses quickly alerted emergency teams, prompting a swift response from Kenya Power technicians and Kiambu County firefighters. The rescue teams worked together and safely brought her down from the 40-meter structure.

Depression Linked to Unemployment

Witnesses said the woman, a university graduate, struggled with depression caused by long-term unemployment. Her close friend noted that many young graduates face similar pressure.
“My friend finished school but found no job, and the stress overwhelmed her,” the friend said.

Growing Concerns Over Youth Mental Health

A parent at the scene expressed concern about rising mental health cases among the youth. The parent said many educated young people feel hopeless due to shrinking job opportunities.
“We are shocked by these incidents. Our children are giving up despite their education,” the parent said.

Calls for Safety Measures Around Power Installations

Residents urged the government and Kenya Power to fence off pylons in the area. They warned that unsecured pylons pose risks to vulnerable individuals and children.

Community Appeals for Mental Health Awareness

Locals emphasized the need for open conversations on mental health. They encouraged young people to seek help when overwhelmed.
“All I can tell the youth is to speak up and get support,” one resident said.
