Uganda Grants Kenyans Visa-Free Entry for Up to 90 Days
The Government of Uganda has confirmed that Kenyan citizens can enter the country visa-free. The policy allows Kenyans to stay for up to three months without a visa. Authorities announced the update in March 2026 as part of a broader immigration reform.
Consequently, the move simplifies travel for tourism and business activities. Additionally, the policy strengthens regional cooperation within East Africa.
Key Details of the Visa-Free Policy
Under the new arrangement, Kenyans can stay in Uganda for up to 90 days. The visa waiver applies to both tourism and business visits. Therefore, travelers no longer need to apply for a visa before arrival. Furthermore, entry procedures remain simple for citizens of Kenya.
Kenyans may travel using only their national identification card. This arrangement follows existing protocols within the East African Community.
At the border, immigration officials issue a free Inter-State Pass. This small travel slip allows temporary entry and movement within Uganda. Consequently, cross-border travel becomes faster and more convenient.
Part of a Wider Visa Exemption Expansion
Uganda expanded its visa-free entry list to include nationals from 40 countries. Several African and Caribbean nations now benefit from the policy. Examples include Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan.
The expansion reflects Uganda’s commitment to improving regional mobility. Additionally, the government hopes to strengthen economic and cultural exchanges.

Promoting Regional Integration
The visa waiver aligns with the integration goals of the East African Community. The EAC promotes the free movement of people, goods, and services. Therefore, removing travel barriers supports stronger regional partnerships.
It also encourages collaboration in business, tourism, and trade. As a result, citizens can move more freely across neighboring countries.
Boosting Tourism and Trade Opportunities
Ugandan authorities expect the policy to increase tourist arrivals. Moreover, easier travel encourages cross-border business investments. Entrepreneurs can now explore opportunities without complex visa processes.
Consequently, the move could strengthen trade relations between Kenya and Uganda. Local tourism operators may also benefit from increased visitor numbers.
Reciprocity Between Kenya and Uganda
The visa-free policy also reflects reciprocal travel arrangements within Africa. For example, Kenya already allows most African citizens visa-free entry.
Visitors from many African countries can stay in Kenya for up to two months. Meanwhile, EAC citizens may remain for up to six months without visas. Therefore, Uganda’s new policy reinforces mutual cooperation within the region.
