The Siaya senator shared a personal tribute on Raila’s first death anniversary, while aides confirmed he was receiving treatment.

Oburu honours Raila in a birthday message shared from Nairobi Hospital on October 15, amid concerns over his health. The Siaya senator marked the occasion with close family members and political allies.

The day also marked the first anniversary of his younger brother’s death. In his message on X, Oburu Oginga reflected on the connection between his birthday and the loss of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Oburu described the date as a deeply personal meeting point between life and loss. He said celebrating another year brought mixed emotions because it also recalled his brother’s passing.

He also reflected on their shared journey, saying their bond extended beyond physical separation. For Oburu, the coincidence of the two dates reinforced a connection that death could not end.

His tribute focused on family, remembrance and the lasting place Raila held in his life. Alongside those reflections, he thanked the people who arranged a surprise birthday gathering at the hospital.

Aides confirm treatment amid health speculation

The message came amid reports that Oburu had entered Nairobi Hospital’s intensive care unit. However, his aides confirmed only that he was receiving treatment and declined to disclose details of his condition.

Unverified claims of his death had also circulated on social media. In response, ODM officials and his aides reassured the public that he was alive and receiving medical attention.

Meanwhile, his extended absence from public engagements had prompted further questions about his health. Reports of a trip to the United Kingdom for medical examinations and recuperation had also drawn attention.

His birthday post offered a personal update, but it did not explain his medical condition. The message instead centred on remembrance and gratitude for the support around him.

Family and ODM members join celebration

Oburu thanked his spouses, Dr Ann Oburu and Mama Judith Oburu, for their love and care. He also praised Nairobi Hospital staff for their professionalism and kindness.

ODM trustee Elder Joshua Kawino represented the party fraternity at the gathering. In addition, Oburu acknowledged his domestic staff and the Pawaa Centre team for helping organise the occasion.

He said their presence brought comfort to a day that combined celebration with grief. His thanks extended to everyone who helped make the hospital gathering special.

The celebration also came as ODM faced questions about its leadership and political direction following Raila’s death. Oburu took over the party after his brother’s passing, while internal disagreements over its future continue.

As a result, his health has attracted interest beyond his family. Party members and political observers have also closely followed concerns about his recovery.
