Opposition leaders Fred Matiang’i, Martha Karua and Ndindi Nyoro have pledged to unite behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the August 2027 General Election.
The three leaders made the declaration during a joint rally in Njoro, Nakuru County, on Wednesday, where they called for political change and outlined proposals to address the cost of living, unemployment, taxation and corruption.
They also urged eligible Kenyans to register as voters and participate in the upcoming elections, arguing that a united opposition could offer a credible alternative to the current administration.
Matiang’i, a Jubilee Party presidential hopeful, attended the rally alongside Karua of the People’s Liberation Party and Nyoro of the People’s Party of Kenya.
Karua Says Opposition Will Agree on One Candidate
Karua said opposition leaders were working towards a common presidential candidate but would announce their preferred flag-bearer at a later date.
“We are keeping our cards close to our chests and re-aligning ourselves. We will declare a united flag-bearer later next year,” Karua said.
She urged Kenyans to elect leaders who prioritise public interests, criticising elected officials she believes have failed to deliver for their constituents.
Karua also maintained that the proposed coalition remained open to other like-minded political leaders. She insisted that none of the coalition principals would enjoy special treatment during the selection process.
“We are democratic and we will follow the due process when picking the flag-bearer, and that is why we are here together,” she said.
The leaders’ commitment signals an effort to strengthen opposition cooperation ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
Nyoro Promises Tax Cuts and Healthcare Reforms
Nyoro criticised the government’s handling of economic and social issues, arguing that political change could improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
He pledged to reduce taxes deducted from workers’ salaries and expand access to medical insurance. He also proposed increasing monthly stipends for older persons from KSh2,000 to KSh4,000.
Additionally, Nyoro promised improved support for persons living with disabilities as part of the opposition’s proposed social protection agenda.
He said the healthcare proposals would seek to expand coverage for medical conditions and reduce the financial burden on households struggling with treatment costs.
However, the proposals would require detailed policy plans and funding arrangements if the opposition secures power.
Matiang’i Warns Against Election Violence
Matiang’i urged political leaders and supporters to maintain peaceful engagement as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
The former Interior Cabinet Secretary warned Kenyans against repeating the violence that followed the disputed 2007 General Election.
The 2007/2008 post-election violence left more than 1,000 people dead and displaced hundreds of thousands, according to widely documented historical accounts.
Matiang’i stressed the importance of national unity, saying political differences should not undermine peaceful coexistence.
His remarks come as political alliances begin taking shape ahead of the next General Election.
Opposition Unity Faces the 2027 Test
Although the three leaders have pledged to support one presidential candidate, the coalition must still agree on its flag-bearer and establish a shared political agenda.
Their ability to resolve leadership questions and maintain cooperation could determine whether the emerging alliance becomes a serious challenger to Ruto.
For now, the Njoro rally signals a renewed push for opposition unity, with the leaders seeking to turn public concerns over taxation, healthcare and the cost of living into political support ahead of August 2027.
