Thousands of Kenyans gathered at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo on October 15, 2026, to commemorate one year since Raila Amolo Odinga’s death.
President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta and other political leaders joined mourners to celebrate his life and legacy. For many supporters, Raila remains the president Kenya never had.
Affectionately known as Baba, Raila shaped Kenya’s political direction for decades. Although he never occupied State House, his influence extended far beyond electoral contests.
The Freedom Fighter Who Changed Kenya
Raila’s legacy began with his fight for democracy during the KANU era. His political activism and years of detention made him a prominent figure in Kenya’s struggle for political freedom.
He also championed constitutional reforms that culminated in the 2010 Constitution. The new law introduced devolved government, strengthened institutional checks and expanded citizens’ rights.
Five Presidential Bids, One Enduring Following
Raila contested Kenya’s presidency in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022. Despite repeatedly falling short of State House, he maintained a formidable grassroots following.
His supporters often regarded him as the People’s President, particularly after the disputed 2007 and 2017 elections. His political journey reflected both the frustrations and aspirations of millions of Kenyans.
From Opposition Leader to Peacemaker
Raila’s political legacy also includes efforts to ease national tensions. Following the disputed 2007 election, he became Prime Minister under the 2008 power-sharing agreement with President Mwai Kibaki.
In March 2018, his handshake with Uhuru Kenyatta eased political tensions and reshaped the national conversation. Later, his engagement with President Ruto’s administration contributed to the formation of the broad-based government in 2024.
These decisions demonstrated his willingness to pursue political dialogue, even after years of fierce rivalry.

A Legacy Beyond State House
One year after his death, Raila’s political influence remains a powerful force in Kenya. His absence has intensified debates over his succession and the future of his political movement.
However, his legacy extends beyond party politics and presidential ambitions. His supporters remember a leader who challenged authority, mobilised ordinary citizens and helped shape Kenya’s democratic journey.
History will remember Kenya’s presidents by the offices they occupied. Yet Raila’s place in the national story rests on something different: the millions who believed in his leadership.
For them, Baba will forever remain the president Kenya never had.
