Registration certificates for five additional Kenyan political parties

The Registrar of Political Parties issued five full registration certificates and urged parties to meet ongoing legal and administrative obligations.

Kenya’s fully registered political parties have increased to 107 after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) approved five additional parties.

The office issued full registration certificates on October 16. It also granted a provisional registration certificate to the Economic Patriotic Alliance (EPA).

The five parties that received full registration certificates are:

  • Mwongozo Mpya Party (MMP)
  • Imarisha Uchumi Party (IUP)
  • United Super Alliance Party (USAP)
  • Forward Kenya Party (FKP)
  • People’s Prosperity Party (PPP)

Meanwhile, EPA received provisional status rather than full registration. The five full approvals brought the national total to 107.

Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Lorionokou presided over the issuance of the certificates. He urged the newly registered parties to follow their constitutions and uphold established rules and principles in their operations.

Election deadlines and continuing compliance

Deputy Director of Registration Locha Ekurudi highlighted statutory deadlines for participation in the next General Election. Parties must meet those deadlines to qualify to take part.

However, Ekurudi stressed that compliance obligations extend beyond the election period. Parties must continue meeting legal and administrative requirements even after securing full registration.

The ORPP team also guided the parties on data and records management, alongside membership management. Other requirements covered maintaining the requisite headquarters and county offices, as well as establishing inclusive governance organs.

The guidance addressed both internal party operations and the organisational structures parties must maintain. Full registration, Ekurudi noted, does not end their responsibility to comply with these obligations.
