Amorim Dismissed After 14 Months
Manchester United have sacked head coach Rúben Amorim, ending his 14-month spell at Old Trafford.
His final match was Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Leeds United. The result left United sixth in the Premier League after 20 games.
Fletcher Set for Interim Role
Former midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge on an interim basis. He currently coaches United’s Under-18 side.
Fletcher’s first match could be Wednesday’s away fixture against Burnley. The club plans to appoint a permanent manager in the summer.
Breakdown Behind the Scenes
United’s leadership, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, made the decision after relations broke down internally.
Tensions became public after Amorim’s post-match comments at Elland Road. He insisted he was the club’s “manager” rather than a “coach” and ruled out resigning.
Contract and Compensation
Amorim joined United from Sporting CP in November 2024. His contract runs until 2027, with an option for a further year.
The agreement reportedly includes no break clause. As a result, United must pay out the remainder of his deal.
Tactical Disagreements
Amorim faced criticism for sticking to a 3-4-3 formation throughout his time at United.
Although the team tested other systems in training, he often returned to the back three in matches. United used a different shape in a 1-0 win over Newcastle in December before reverting to the 3-4-3 days later.

Costly Exit at Old Trafford
United paid €11 million to sign Amorim from Sporting, where he won two Primeira Liga titles and two Portuguese League Cups.
Despite spending over £200 million on new players in the 2025 summer transfer window, United struggled for consistency. The club recorded its worst league start since 1992-93.
Amorim leaves United sixth in the table as the club prepares for another managerial change.
