Édouard Mendy: From Unemployment to AFCON Glory

Édouard Mendy’s career ranks among football’s most inspiring comeback stories. At 22, he queued for unemployment benefits. By 2026, he had won major trophies across three continents. His journey reflects resilience, discipline and elite performance under pressure.

Mendy reinforced his legendary status on January 18, 2026, after delivering a decisive performance in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

Senegal faced hosts Morocco in a tense final in Rabat. The match reached its peak deep into stoppage time when the referee awarded Morocco a controversial penalty.

Mendy stayed composed. He read Brahim Díaz’s Panenka attempt and caught the ball cleanly in the 90+24th minute. The save silenced the home crowd and shifted momentum instantly.

Senegal capitalised moments later. The West Africans scored in extra time and secured a 1–0 victory. The win handed Senegal their second AFCON title and gave Mendy his second continental crown with the national team.

Throughout the tournament, Mendy kept four clean sheets and conceded only two goals. His consistency anchored Senegal’s title run.

A Career Defined by Historic Firsts

Mendy has achieved milestones few goalkeepers can match. He became the first goalkeeper to win “Best Goalkeeper” honours in major tournaments across three continents.

His honours include two AFCON titles, the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, and the AFC Champions League Elite with Al-Ahli in 2025. He also won Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament in Asia.

In 2021, Mendy made history again. He became the first African goalkeeper to win both The Best FIFA Goalkeeper and UEFA Goalkeeper of the Year awards.

These achievements contrast sharply with his early struggles. In 2014, Cherbourg released him. Mendy found himself without a club and close to quitting football. He chose persistence instead.

Current Form and What Lies Ahead

At 33, Mendy remains a key figure for club and country. Al-Ahli recently extended his contract until 2028, backing his continued influence in the Saudi Pro League.

During the 2025/26 season, he has posted a 72.7 per cent save rate and five clean sheets in nine appearances. His performances keep Al-Ahli competitive domestically and in Asia.

Mendy has earned 58 caps for Senegal. He remains the backbone of the Lions of Teranga as they begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.

From unemployment lines to lifting trophies in London, Dakar and Jeddah, Édouard Mendy’s rise continues to inspire. His story proves that resilience can reshape destiny at the highest level of sport.
