Kenya Lionesses Conclude Nairobi HSBC 7s Series with Defeat Against Spain
The Kenya Lionesses began their match against Spain brightly. Freshia Oduor scored a try in the second minute, giving Kenya an early lead.
However, Spain quickly responded. Abril Camacho Ruiz and Denisse Gortazar scored in the eighth minute, followed by converted tries from Silvia Morales and Carmen Miranda Miralles in the ninth. Consequently, Kenya lost momentum and could not recover.
Kenya played five matches in total, recording a single win. Their standout performance came against Brazil on day one. Initially trailing 12-0, the Lionesses staged a remarkable comeback.
Stella Wafula, Janet Okelo, and Naomi Amuguni scored crucial tries, securing victory. This showed the team’s resilience and fighting spirit.
Challenges: Slow Starts
Despite flashes of brilliance, Kenya consistently conceded early tries. Falling behind forced the Lionesses to chase the game, often leaving them too little time to recover.
Coach Simon Odongo noted that the team’s nerves affected their performance. He said, “It had been a tough tournament, but the ladies showed up today. Many had not played in a sold-out stadium before.”
Preparing for Upcoming Legs
Looking forward, Kenya aims to improve starts and maintain intensity from the first whistle. The team will compete in Montevideo, Uruguay, on March 21-22, 2026, and in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on March 28-29, 2026.
Focusing on consistent performances will be key to turning potential into results on the international stage.
The Lionesses demonstrated courage and determination throughout the Nairobi leg.
With targeted preparation, stronger beginnings, and strategic gameplay, Kenya hopes to convert resilience into more victories in the upcoming series.
