Messi Leaves Stadium Early in Kolkata; Fans Riot During GOAT Tour
Angry fans in Kolkata, India, broke barricades and stormed the pitch after football superstar Lionel Messi abruptly left Salt Lake Stadium.
The 38-year-old Argentina and Inter Miami forward is on a three-day “GOAT Tour” of India. He arrived in West Bengal on Saturday, greeted by cheering fans chanting his name.
Frustration Turns to Chaos
Thousands of spectators, many wearing Messi jerseys and waving Argentine flags, packed the stadium. Heavy security kept Messi out of reach, leaving fans frustrated.
Messi toured the pitch briefly, waved to supporters, and left earlier than scheduled. Fans reacted violently—ripping seats, throwing bottles, and vandalising banners and tents.
“For me, to watch Messi is a dream. But I missed the chance because of poor stadium management,” said businessman Nabin Chatterjee, 37.
Another fan told the Press Trust of India that people spent “a month’s salary” on tickets. “I paid Rs 5,000 ($55) to see Messi, not politicians. The police were taking selfies. The management is to blame,” said Ajay Shah.

Statue Unveiling and Missed Exhibition
Earlier, Messi unveiled a 21-metre (70-foot) statue of himself holding the World Cup trophy. He was also expected to play a short exhibition game, which did not happen due to the early exit.
Authorities Respond
Javed Shamim, senior police official, confirmed that the event’s “chief organiser” was arrested. He said authorities would ensure ticket refunds.
State Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and apologised to Messi and fans. “I have ordered a probe into this incident,” she said on X.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) said it had no role in organising the private event and received no clearance requests.
Messi Tour Continues
Messi will continue his tour in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi. His itinerary may include a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This week, Messi won his second consecutive Major League Soccer MVP award after leading Inter Miami to the MLS title. He will lead Argentina in the 2026 World Cup in North America.
