Teargas Drama Cuts Short Sifuna’s Fiery Kitengela Rally
The Linda Wananchi rally in Kitengela ended abruptly after a teargas canister landed inside the crowd. Consequently, supporters scattered as panic briefly replaced celebration.
The incident happened on Sunday, February 15, during an event organized by ODM breakaway leaders. At the time, Edwin Sifuna was addressing the crowd and introducing visiting leaders.
Videos circulating online showed thick smoke spreading quickly through the gathering. As a result, attendees ran for safety while organizers struggled to restore order.
Leaders Call for Calm Amid Chaos
Despite the confusion, Sifuna urged supporters to remain calm and avoid confrontation. However, another canister reportedly followed moments later, escalating tension.
Witnesses claimed the crowd had grown difficult to control before the disruption. Nevertheless, the source of the teargas remains officially unconfirmed.
Some attendees speculated that authorities attempted to disperse the rally. Meanwhile, others argued that the response was unnecessary given the peaceful setting.
Leaders present included Babu Owino and James Orengo, who had joined supporters earlier in the day. The politicians had attended a church service before the public gathering.
The service took place at St. Peter’s Orkeju Emunyak ACK Church, drawing large local attendance. Therefore, excitement already filled the town before the rally began.
Social Media Reaction and Accusations
Following the disruption, Sifuna issued a strong statement on social media. He accused government agents of targeting the event and intimidating supporters.
According to his post, officers allegedly damaged sound equipment earlier that morning. Subsequently, he described the teargas incident as a deliberate attempt to silence the meeting.
Even so, he thanked Kitengela residents for turning out in large numbers. He also promised that the movement would continue organizing future rallies.
Rising Political Tension
Importantly, this incident follows several similar disruptions at opposition gatherings. Events linked to Rigathi Gachagua have reportedly faced comparable confrontations.
Analysts say these clashes reflect increasing political tension ahead of future campaigns. Therefore, security at public rallies may remain a growing concern.
Ultimately, what began as a celebratory meeting ended under clouds of smoke. Yet supporters insist the message of the rally still reached thousands.
