Why Lewis Hamilton Says Kenya Could Be His “Dream Home”
Lewis Hamilton has revealed that Kenya is one of the few places he could imagine calling home.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion shared the remarks while preparing for the 2026 season opener in Melbourne.
During media interviews, Hamilton reflected on his experiences across Africa. Moreover, he described his visit to Kenya as deeply transformative.
According to Hamilton, the country offered him peace, perspective, and a powerful connection to his heritage.
Kenya Trip That Changed His Perspective
Hamilton’s admiration for Kenya grew stronger during his August 2022 summer break.
At the time, he traveled across several regions while exploring his ancestral roots. Consequently, the journey became what he later described as a “life-changing reset.”
His travels included visits to some of Kenya’s most iconic destinations.
Exploring the Maasai Mara and Samburu
During the trip, Hamilton visited the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve.
There, he witnessed the spectacular Great Migration. Millions of wildebeests and zebras crossed the Mara River in one of nature’s greatest events.
Additionally, Hamilton explored northern Kenya’s Samburu region. While there, he visited the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, Africa’s first indigenous community-owned elephant rescue center.
The visit left a deep impression on the racing icon. Hamilton later explained that the journey helped him feel grounded and re-centered.

Advocacy for a Formula 1 Race in Africa
Beyond travel experiences, Hamilton has consistently advocated for Formula 1 to return to Africa. Currently, Africa remains the only inhabited continent without a Formula 1 race. Therefore, Hamilton has spent years pushing for the sport’s return.
He identified South Africa and Rwanda as possible hosts for a future Grand Prix. However, Kenya currently lacks the specialized infrastructure required for a Formula 1 circuit.
Modern races require an FIA Grade 1 track, which the country does not yet have.
Pride in African Heritage
Hamilton also used the moment to speak about his African heritage. He said his ancestry connects to countries including Benin, Senegal, and Nigeria.
Furthermore, he emphasized that Africa holds enormous natural resources and cultural power. According to him, unity among African nations could unlock huge global influence.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 F1 Season
As Hamilton prepares for another Formula 1 season with Scuderia Ferrari, he continues promoting Africa on the global stage.
The veteran driver believes the continent deserves greater recognition in world sports. For now, his message remains clear. Kenya is not just a destination for him. Instead, it represents a place he could truly call home.
