CCTV Cameras Are Coming to 6 Kenyan Cities
Kenya is preparing a major upgrade to urban security. Specifically, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced on June 14, 2026, that the government is in the final stages of procuring a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system. Furthermore, the initiative aims to modernise law enforcement and combat rising urban crime across the country.
What the Plan Targets
The surveillance system has a clear focus. Specifically, it targets petty crime, muggings and pickpocketing in major urban centres.
Additionally, the plan addresses the growing concern around juvenile gangs operating within cities. Therefore, this initiative responds directly to crimes that affect everyday Kenyans the most.
The Six Pilot Cities
The rollout begins with a select group of urban areas. Specifically, the pilot cities include Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nyeri.
Consequently, these locations represent some of Kenya’s largest and busiest urban populations.
How the System Will Work
The technology centres on real-time monitoring capabilities. Specifically, the surveillance network will link directly to centralised command centres.
Furthermore, these command centres will allow security agencies to track criminal activities instantly. Additionally, this setup enables faster and more efficient deployment of officers when incidents occur.
The NYPD Connection
This plan did not emerge in isolation. Specifically, it follows a study visit by CS Murkomen and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to the New York Police Department on June 3, 2026.
Therefore, the visit allowed Kenyan officials to examine advanced city surveillance models already in use internationally. Consequently, the upcoming rollout reflects global benchmarking against proven urban security systems.
