KWS Captures Elephant Behind Makueni Infant Death

A tragic human-wildlife conflict incident has ended with the capture of the elephant responsible. Specifically, Kenya Wildlife Service officers in Makindu successfully captured and relocated the elephant following a fatal attack in the Kiboko area of Makueni County.


The Tragic Incident

The attack occurred under devastating circumstances. Specifically, on Monday morning, June 15, the elephant attack claimed the life of nine-month-old baby girl Mutanu Musenya.

Furthermore, the child’s mother, Faith Musenya, 29, suffered a fractured leg while desperately trying to save her baby.

The Mother’s Recovery

Faith Musenya remains under medical care following the incident. Specifically, she is currently undergoing treatment and recovering at Makindu Sub-County Hospital.

Authorities moved quickly to address the immediate danger. Specifically, the KWS Problematic Animal Control Unit safely contained and relocated the troublesome elephant on June 16, 2026.


Community Demands Urgent Action After Livestock Encroachment Incident

The incident has triggered widespread grief and anger among local residents. Furthermore, community members argue that stray livestock continue to endanger safety and disrupt normal livelihoods in the area.

In response, local leaders, including Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, have strongly urged the Kenya Wildlife Service to act decisively. Consequently, they are calling for the immediate removal of stray herds from human settlements.

Additionally, they want the animals driven back into protected areas of Tsavo National Park. Ultimately, residents insist that stronger enforcement will restore safety, reduce conflict, and protect both communities and wildlife ecosystems.
