KWS Safely Recaptures Two Lionesses in Rongai

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed that two lionesses strayed from Nairobi National Park into Sholinke Market, Rongai, on January 7. Moreover, the animals wandered into human settlement areas, sparking concern among residents.

Consequently, KWS rangers, veterinary teams, and Rongai community members launched a coordinated operation to track them down. By evening, the lionesses were safely recaptured and reunited with their pride.

KWS Lead Conservation Technology Officer Victor Matsanza revealed one lioness was collared, easing the tracking process significantly. Additionally, the collar used GPS and satellite technology to provide precise location data.

The operation involved rangers conducting intense tracking missions, some extending overnight, both on foot and by vehicle.

Furthermore, KWS deployed advanced conservation tools, including the Earth Ranger system, which monitors animal populations in conservancies. Drones were also used for real-time surveillance, covering vast areas and ensuring the lionesses were located quickly.

Matsanza emphasized the vital role of local communities in wildlife conservation. Moreover, he noted that conservancy teams often provide early warnings about straying animals, enabling faster responses.
