KWS Issues Alert as Two Lionesses Roam Rongai
Residents Advised to Remain Vigilant
Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has urged Ongata Rongai residents to remain on high alert. Moreover, two lionesses escaped Nairobi National Park on January 7, sparking safety concerns.
Lions Sighted Near Sholinke
The lionesses were last seen at Sholinke Trading Centre, approximately 8km from the park. Additionally, Sholinke lies barely 9km from the heart of Ongata Rongai town.
Tracking Teams Dispatched
KWS quickly dispatched rangers and veterinarians to track the lionesses. Consequently, the teams aim to capture and return them safely to the park.
Safety Advisory Issued
Residents were advised to avoid the affected area and keep children indoors. Furthermore, KWS provided toll-free and WhatsApp contacts for reporting any sightings.
Operation Underway
KWS confirmed rangers are already on site managing the situation. Additionally, veterinary teams are en route to dart and relocate the lionesses.
Past Wildlife Incidents in Rongai
Wild animals, especially lions and hyenas, have often been spotted in Ongata Rongai. Consequently, residents have expressed fear over repeated wildlife encounters in residential areas.
Previous Lion Sightings
In March 2025, CCTV footage captured a lioness roaming a residential compound in Rongai. Moreover, another lioness was captured near homes in January 2025, heightening public concern.
Possible Family Connection
Rangers suggested the captured lioness could be related to lions caught in 2024. Ultimately, repeated escapes highlight ongoing wildlife management challenges near Nairobi National Park.
