Nyabisase School Closed Over Principal Protest Chaos

On Monday, July 6, 2026, Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii County, closed indefinitely after student unrest led to a dormitory fire.

School authorities released students to their parents as police launched investigations into the incident. The unrest reportedly followed the appointment of a new principal to replace the retired Chief Principal, David Ogega.

Protest Erupts Over New Principal

Reports indicate that students staged demonstrations after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) posted a new principal to the school.

The protests quickly escalated, forcing learners to leave the school compound. Some students were seen along nearby roads and in Nyamache town as the situation worsened.

Dormitory Catches Fire

During the unrest, a fire broke out in one of the school’s dormitories. The blaze destroyed part of the institution before responders brought it under control.

At least one student sustained injuries during the incident and received medical treatment. Authorities have not yet established the exact cause of the fire.

Parents Raise Concerns

Some parents claimed the unrest stemmed from opposition to the appointment of the new principal. They alleged that certain local residents and teachers influenced students to protest.

According to the claims, opponents questioned the appointment because the incoming principal had not attained the rank of Chief Principal. However, authorities have not officially confirmed the allegations.

Police Launch Investigations

Police officers from Nyamache, Kenyenya, and Nyangusu police stations responded to the school. The officers restored order and secured the institution.

Investigators have also begun collecting evidence to determine what triggered the unrest and the dormitory fire. Meanwhile, school officials have urged parents to remain calm as investigations continue.

The school will remain closed until authorities declare it safe for learning to resume. Officials are expected to announce the reopening date after completing security assessments and investigations.
