Detectives recovered 170.8 kilogrammes of cannabis during an operation in Bungoma.
Detectives are pursuing a driver who fled after a highway collision killed motorcyclist Muzungu Munialo.
Detectives recovered 170.8 kilogrammes of cannabis in a Bungoma drug bust after a fatal crash along the Malaba-Webuye highway. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) estimated the drugs’ street value at Sh5,124,000.
The suspected trafficker escaped after his vehicle collided with a motorcycle during a police pursuit. The crash killed motorcyclist Muzungu Munialo, while the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled.
The operation involved detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) in Bungoma and DCI Webuye West officers.
Intelligence led to Bungoma drug bust
The DCI said credible intelligence prompted detectives to lay an ambush along the highway. They were targeting a white Mazda CX-5, registration KDY 338F, suspected of carrying narcotics.
However, the driver reportedly spotted the detectives as he approached and sped away, prompting a chase. The pursuit ended when the Mazda collided with a red TVS motorcycle, registration KMFV 109F.
Munialo sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Traffic officers then processed the crash scene before detectives searched the abandoned Mazda and discovered suspected drugs.
Police subsequently towed the vehicle to a station for a more detailed examination. During that search, detectives found 162 bales of cannabis wrapped in yellow adhesive tape.
They also recovered an additional number plate, registration KF2 8588, from the back seat. Investigators suspect the plate may have served to conceal the vehicle’s identity.
NANIB Bungoma has since taken custody of the vehicle and seized cannabis for further investigations. Meanwhile, detectives are pursuing the driver and working to identify the wider network behind the suspected trafficking operation.
The DCI also expressed condolences to Munialo’s family, friends and relatives following his death.
