Spanish football is mourning the tragic death of CD Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel, who died aged 30 following a collision during a league match against FC Andorra.

The striker passed away on Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after suffering serious injuries during the LaLiga Hypermotion fixture on Monday night.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. However, the final moments turned into a medical emergency after a devastating collision involving De Miguel and Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.

The incident happened deep into stoppage time when both players raced towards a bouncing ball during a counter-attack. Owono rushed out of his penalty area to intercept the ball but collided with the advancing Tenerife forward.

The goalkeeper’s knee struck De Miguel around the upper chest and head area, leaving him motionless on the pitch. The referee immediately showed Owono a straight red card following the incident.

Players from both teams quickly called for medical assistance as stadium officials rushed to attend to the injured striker. The referee subsequently abandoned the match as emergency personnel continued their response.

De Miguel Dies After Hospitalisation

CD Tenerife later confirmed that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to hospital by ambulance.

Although medical personnel managed to resuscitate him during the journey, his condition remained critical.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit at Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Doctors continued efforts to stabilise him throughout the night.

However, his neurological condition reportedly deteriorated rapidly. The club later confirmed that he died at approximately 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

In an emotional statement, CD Tenerife expressed its devastation over the loss of the forward.

“Heartbroken, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe this is true,” the club stated. It added, “There are no words of comfort. Fly high, Jesús.”

Spanish Football Mourns De Miguel

Tributes quickly poured in from across the Spanish football community following confirmation of his death.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid were among the major clubs that expressed condolences to his family, teammates and friends.

Meanwhile, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced the postponement of scheduled Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches on Tuesday as a mark of respect.

De Miguel’s death has sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with players, clubs and supporters united in mourning.

At just 30, the Tenerife forward’s life and football career have been cut tragically short. His passing has also renewed attention on the dangers players face during high-speed challenges on the pitch.
