Kenyan boxing ahead of the Kisumu league round

Head coach Musa Benjamin will assess male boxers in Kisumu as he builds Kenya’s team for the world championships in Turkey.

The National Boxing League heads to Kisumu next week, giving Kenya’s male boxers a test before the world championships. Head coach Musa Benjamin will use the fourth leg to assess contenders for the national team.

The penultimate league round runs from Thursday to Saturday. Meanwhile, the Elite Men’s World Boxing Championships will take place in Istanbul, Turkey, from November 25 to December 4, 2026.

Benjamin wants to select a strong squad capable of challenging for medals at the global competition. He said the Kisumu contests would help him judge which boxers are fit for the Istanbul assignment.

The assessment also comes as Kenya seeks to build on its success at the inaugural World Boxing Africa Boxing Championships.

National Boxing League follows continental success

Kenya finished as overall winners at the continental tournament at Kasarani Indoor Arena the previous weekend. The Hit Squad collected five gold medals, three silver and six bronze.

Women led that achievement, contributing four gold medals, two silver and one bronze to Kenya’s total. Their performance also highlighted the contribution of female boxers to the country’s continental success.

Following that result, Benjamin wants the men to challenge strongly for honours at both continental and global competitions. Male boxers have long formed a pillar of Kenyan boxing, and he wants them to maintain that role.

For those targeting national team places, the Kisumu round therefore offers an opportunity to demonstrate their readiness for Istanbul.
