Kenyans on social media have expressed support for Nyambura Mburu following a devastating apartment fire in Gachie, Kiambu County, that killed her two young daughters.

The children, Tehilla Cara Wambui, five, and Angel Nyla Njeri, three, died after a fire broke out in a fourth-floor apartment along Kiuna Road.

The tragedy sparked public debate after their father, Kenyan film director Kennedy Njau, popularly known as Ken Heman, called for an independent police investigation.

Njau reportedly alleged that the children had been left inside the apartment before their nanny arrived. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain subject to investigation.

Public Debate Over the Children’s Funeral

The tragedy has also prompted online discussion about Mburu’s role in the funeral arrangements. Social media users have alleged that the grieving mother was sidelined during the children’s send-off. Some also questioned reports that her photograph was absent from the official funeral eulogy.

These claims have fuelled criticism online, with users calling for both parents’ grief to be treated with dignity. However, the allegations about the funeral arrangements require independent confirmation. They should not be treated as established facts without reliable supporting evidence.

DNA Paternity Request Draws Online Attention

Discussion intensified after social media users circulated claims about court filings concerning a DNA paternity test.

According to reports shared online, Njau had requested a test to establish whether the children were biologically his during the week of the fire.

The reported request has prompted questions and criticism from some online commentators. However, the context, timing and contents of the court documents should be independently verified before drawing conclusions about their significance or linking them to the tragedy.

Nyambura Previously Alleged Domestic Abuse

The renewed attention has also brought earlier allegations of domestic abuse involving the former couple back into public discussion.

In accounts reportedly shared in July 2025, Mburu described alleged physical and emotional abuse during their relationship, which she said lasted about 13 years. She reportedly alleged that she was beaten with household items, including electric cables, hangers and belts.

Mburu also reportedly recounted an incident in which she said she was kicked while eight months pregnant. She alleged that the assault triggered premature labour and led to the newborns receiving intensive medical care.

These are serious allegations and should be attributed to Mburu’s reported accounts. Any response from Njau, as well as relevant court findings or official records, should be included where available.

Police Continue to Examine the Gachie Fire

Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire. Reports indicate that a third child survived after neighbours helped rescue the child from the apartment balcony.

A postmortem examination reportedly found that Tehilla and Angel died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators must still establish the circumstances that led to the fatal blaze.

Calls for Fair Reporting and Accountability

The deaths have left the family and community grieving, while online debate continues over the parents’ accounts and their past relationship.

Calls for accountability should be guided by verified evidence and the findings of investigators. As the inquiry continues, it remains important to protect the surviving child’s privacy, respect the family’s grief and avoid treating online allegations as proof of responsibility.
