Kesha’s Every Friday: Rachel Ruto Sparks Drought Debate

During a United States visit in late March 2026, Rachel Ruto claimed Kenya has not experienced drought since 2022.
She also stated that the country has not faced starvation during the current administration.

While speaking to CBN News, she linked rainfall and food security to national prayers. Specifically, she referenced the February 14, 2023 national prayer day.

First Lady Attributes Rainfall to Prayer

According to Rachel Ruto, rainfall began one month after the national prayer event. Moreover, she claimed the rains have continued consistently since then.

Additionally, she stated that Kenya now enjoys food security and surplus production. She credited government fertilizer programs and farmers’ resilience for improved yields.

Consequently, she suggested that Kenya can even export excess food produce.

Official Data Contradicts the Claims

However, official reports present a different picture of Kenya’s food security situation. The National Drought Management Authority has issued drought alerts in several counties.

For instance, Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa remain under “Alert” or “Alarm” phases. These warnings followed failed short rains in late 2025.

Furthermore, reports from World Health Organization indicate widespread food insecurity. By February 2026, over 3.5 million Kenyans required urgent humanitarian assistance.

Public Reaction and Growing Criticism

The remarks triggered widespread criticism across Kenya’s media and social platforms. Many citizens argued that the statements ignore ongoing hunger and water shortages.

Additionally, several commentators accused the First Lady of being out of touch. Media outlets highlighted the gap between official data and her claims.

Consequently, the debate has intensified discussions on leadership accountability and communication.

Ongoing Concerns Over Food Security

The controversy highlights deeper concerns about drought management and food security policies. While the government promotes agricultural gains, vulnerable regions still face serious challenges.

Therefore, experts urge balanced messaging backed by verified data and ground realities. Ultimately, accurate communication remains essential for public trust and effective policy response.
