Ecuador declared Friday, June 26, 2026, a nationwide public holiday after its national football team secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

President Daniel Noboa signed Executive Decree No. 431 to celebrate the historic achievement, which sent La Tri into the Round of 32.

The decree applies to both the public and private sectors across Ecuador. Moreover, the government confirmed the holiday is paid and non-recoverable, meaning employees will not be required to make up the missed working hours.

However, essential services will continue operating with minimal staffing. These include healthcare, water supply, electricity, banking, and transit terminals.

The memorable match took place on June 25, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium). Germany made a dream start after Leroy Sané opened the scoring in just the second minute. Nevertheless, Ecuador responded quickly.
