The Deputy President says the government is delivering its pledges through individual projects, urging Murang’a residents to prioritise development ahead of the 2027 election.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has defended the Kenya Kwanza administration’s development record, saying it is fulfilling its manifesto through individual projects as political activity builds ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a public engagement in Maragua, Murang’a County, Kindiki pointed to ongoing government programmes and urged residents and leaders to keep development priorities separate from political competition.
He inspected construction of the Gakoigo Stadium project and announced plans to meet Murang’a leaders to review regional priorities and progress on government commitments.
Sh900 million stadium takes shape
Government records show that Sh900 million has been allocated for the stadium’s construction at Samar in Maragua Constituency. The planned 10,000-capacity facility is intended to meet international standards.
Its proposed features include a standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, a VIP pavilion, modern terraces, changing rooms and spectator stands. The State Department for Sports has put the expected construction period at about nine months.
The project was moved from the original Gakoigo grounds after a technical assessment concluded that the site could not accommodate a stadium of the proposed size and standard. The assessment identified insufficient land, unsuitable ground orientation and an unfavourable gradient.
The State Department for Sports says the original grounds will be rehabilitated rather than abandoned. They are expected to remain available for training and middle-tier competitions, preserving a sporting venue for the community alongside the larger facility.
Government defends sports investment
Kindiki described the administration’s broader investment in sports facilities as the most expensive such expansion in Kenya’s 63-year history.
The Gakoigo project is part of a network of 32 stadium projects that the government says it is developing nationwide. The programme is intended to expand access to sports infrastructure and help young people develop their talents and earn from them.
Kindiki said criticism would not stop the administration from pursuing its development agenda. He argued that the government’s performance should be assessed through projects being implemented rather than political exchanges.
Murang’a leaders to discuss priorities
The Deputy President said his planned meeting with Murang’a leaders would centre on development needs and delivery of the UDA campaign manifesto, rather than political disagreements.
Among the infrastructure priorities he identified was the proposed Bombo–Gwa Thamaki Road. He said the road would require billions of shillings and called for it to be started and completed within one year.
His remarks placed both the stadium and proposed road within a wider push to demonstrate progress on the administration’s commitments in the region.
Call for Mt Kenya unity
Kindiki also urged political unity in Mt Kenya and asked residents not to allow political differences to divide them. While calling for development to take precedence, he encouraged collective support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
He said he would concentrate on delivery rather than answer critics with personal attacks. He added that he had forgiven those who had criticised or insulted him and would not respond in kind.
Kindiki said elders had entrusted him with promoting peace and unity in Mt Kenya. He presented that responsibility as part of his approach to regional engagements as the administration seeks to advance its development programme ahead of the 2027 polls.
