Police in Mombasa are investigating the deaths of a woman and her child following an alleged family attack in Nyali.
The incident happened on Friday morning in Shauri Yako Village, Mkomani, within Nyali Sub-County.
Police identified the suspect as Richard Matiko, who later surrendered at Nyali Police Station.
Another child, a 14-year-old boy, survived the alleged attack despite sustaining injuries.
A Good Samaritan reportedly helped the teenager and rushed him to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Police Probe Family Conflict
According to a police report, the incident may have followed alleged family conflicts.
However, investigators have not established the circumstances that led to the deaths.
Police allege that Matiko attacked his wife and one of their children before attempting to dispose of the bodies.
The police account said the child’s body was placed in a pit latrine.
Investigators also alleged that Matiko attempted to dispose of his wife’s body but could not do so.
The two victims were taken to the Coast General mortuary, police said.
Teenager Escapes Alleged Attack
The surviving 14-year-old reportedly escaped after sustaining injuries during the incident.
The teenager attends Pentrose School and is in Grade 9, according to the police report.
Police have not provided further details about his condition or the extent of his injuries.
The person who assisted him later reported the incident at Nyali Police Station.
Meanwhile, Matiko also presented himself to officers at the same station.
Investigations Continue
Police are continuing to investigate the deaths and the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
The motive has not been conclusively established, although police have linked the incident to alleged family conflicts.
The allegations against Matiko remain subject to the ongoing investigation and any subsequent court proceedings.
Police are expected to conduct further inquiries as they piece together what happened inside the family home.
