EACC Arrests Traffic Officers Over Bribery Allegations

Officers Nabbed in Kisumu-Kisii Highway Operation
Three traffic officers, including an Inspector of Police, were arrested on December 27 for soliciting bribes from motorists. Moreover, the arrests followed an Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) operation at Sondu along the Kisumu-Kisii Highway.

Complaints From Motorists Prompt Action
EACC stated the arrests came after multiple complaints from motorists and road users. Consequently, officers launched an undercover operation to investigate rampant extortion along the busy highway.

Officers Caught Soliciting Bribes
According to EACC, the suspects demanded bribes without inspecting vehicles or enforcing traffic rules. Upon arrest, they were found with cash in various denominations suspected to be proceeds of corruption.

Processing and Detention
The suspects were processed at EACC’s central Nyanza office in Kisumu. Later, they were escorted to Kisumu Railways and Ports Police Station pending investigations.

Previous Arrests Highlight Pattern
The arrests followed similar incidents on December 24 along the Likoni-Lungalunga road. Additionally, four officers were recently arrested on the Nairobi-Nyeri-Embu Highway after undercover operations.

Increased Travel Exploited by Officers
The arrests occurred during heightened holiday travel across Kenya. Officers often exploit increased traffic by soliciting bribes for overspeeding and excess passengers.

EACC Intensifies Anti-Corruption Efforts
EACC confirmed it continues scaling up intelligence and surveillance in corruption-prone sectors. Furthermore, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to promoting integrity and accountability in public service.

Public Urged to Report Corruption
The commission urged Kenyans to report corruption through established channels. Ultimately, EACC emphasized that public cooperation is vital in combating bribery and extortion.
