Ruto Backs Trump’s Bid to Help End Sudan War

President William Ruto has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to help resolve the Sudan conflict, addressing concerns that Kenya was favouring one side in the ongoing war.

Speaking at State House, Nairobi, on Monday during a joint press briefing with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Ruto compared Malaysia’s peace efforts in Eastern Asia to Kenya’s humanitarian role in the Eastern African region, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan.

Ruto said Kenya supports Washington’s renewed push for peace in Sudan. “We also express support for America and President Trump’s intervention in the Sudan crisis, which has now escalated into a very serious humanitarian catastrophe,” he stated.

His remarks came after U.S. officials confirmed stepped-up diplomatic engagement. Last Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on coordinated efforts to secure a humanitarian ceasefire.

Trump has repeatedly pledged to intervene in the Sudan conflict, first at the Saudi Investment Forum in Washington, DC, and later through a statement on his Truth Social platform. His promise followed a request from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Kenya has faced U.S. political pressure over its handling of the crisis. Earlier this year, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Senator Jim Risch accused Nairobi of enabling atrocities by allowing the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to establish what he termed a parallel government in Kenya.

Sudan’s civil war, which erupted in April 2023, has pitted the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the RSF in a brutal fight for control of key regions, including the capital, Khartoum.
