Gridlock Strands Motorists Overnight on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway
Motorists Stranded Overnight
Several motorists and passengers spent the night on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway due to heavy traffic congestion. Moreover, vehicles remained stuck for more than seven hours.
Causes of the Gridlock
Reports indicated roadworks along the highway triggered the congestion. Additionally, lane indiscipline by drivers overtaking worsened the situation during festive travel.
Worst-Affected Sections
The Mai Mahiu stretch in Naivasha and the Salgaa–Mau Summit section were hardest hit. Consequently, overlapping vehicles and slow clearance efforts intensified the gridlock.
Passengers Forced to Sleep in Vehicles
Drivers and passengers without shelter slept inside their vehicles. Furthermore, police efforts to clear the congestion proved futile.
Footage Shows Long Vehicle Lines
Footage revealed buses and trailers lined up for kilometres. Therefore, vehicles moved at a slower pace throughout the night.
Motorists Association Criticizes KeNHA
The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) accused KeNHA of failing to address the traffic menace. Moreover, they claimed congestion was deliberately created during festive season roadworks.
Allegations of Artificial Congestion
Motorists alleged KeNHA engineered congestion to justify tolling highways. Additionally, they criticized poor planning and insensitive scheduling of roadworks.
Call for Accountability
MAK demanded accountability and transparency from KeNHA. Therefore, they urged people-centred planning that prioritizes safety, mobility, and dignity of motorists.
