KDF Deployed to Fast-Track Moi Stadium Upgrade in Kisumu
The Ministry of Defence has announced that Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers will support the rehabilitation of Moi Stadium in Kisumu County. The government expects the upgrade to strengthen sports infrastructure and promote youth talent development.
Rehabilitation Expected to Finish Within a Year
Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru stated on Tuesday, December 10, that the project will be completed within the next year. He confirmed that the KDF will work under a strict schedule to ensure timely delivery.
County Government Approves Military Deployment
On Wednesday, Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya met Kisumu County officials, who formally approved the deployment. This partnership aims to enhance coordination between national and county teams throughout the project.
Stadium to Receive Key Modern Upgrades
Mariru explained that the upgraded stadium will accommodate 10,000 spectators. It will also feature VIP lounges, improved changing rooms, an eight-lane running track, a football pitch, and a training ground. Furthermore, the upgrade supports the government’s wider plan to modernize sports facilities.
Government Stresses Need for Collaboration
PS Mariru underscored that the Ministry of Defence will work closely with other ministries and the Kisumu County Government. He added that this collaboration directly contributes to the National Government Development Agenda.
County Projects Economic and Sports Benefits
In October, the Kisumu County Government said the refurbishment would boost sports and expand economic opportunities. It also noted that the project will hire most of its workforce locally to create jobs.
Upgrade Aligned With National Sports Agenda
President William Ruto’s administration plans to build or upgrade 25 stadiums by 2027. These projects fall under the “Talanta Hela” programme, which aims to monetize sports and nurture creative talent across Kenya.
