6 p.m. Beach Closure Announced in Mombasa
The Mombasa County Government has directed that all beaches close by 6 p.m. during the festive season. The county aims to improve tourist safety and prevent incidents linked to high tide.
Police Enforce Strict Beach Exit Rule
Mombasa County Police Commander Peter Kimani announced the new rule on Wednesday, December 10. He said officers will blow whistles at 6 p.m. to signal beachgoers to leave the water. Moreover, he confirmed that no one will be allowed to remain on the beach after the set time.
County Intensifies Patrols to Prevent Drowning
Kimani explained that the measure seeks to reduce drowning cases. Additionally, county security teams and the Kenya Navy will conduct regular water patrols using boats. These patrols aim to enhance rapid response and monitor high-risk zones.
New Beach Committees Formed to Protect Tourists
Furthermore, Kimani revealed that the county has formed new beach management committees. These committees will handle security and ensure tourists remain safe from rogue beach boys and hawkers. They include officers from KWS, General Police, Tourist Police, and the Coast Guard.
County Targets Safe and Enjoyable Festive Season
Kimani noted that many tourists are expected to visit beaches during the holidays. Therefore, the committees will ensure visitors enjoy the season without harassment or insecurity.
Governor Nassir Issues Additional Event Safety Guidelines
The announcement followed a directive by Governor Abdulswamad Nassir. He ordered all event organizers to seek approval from the disaster management committee before hosting any activity. This directive applies to all public events, whether free or ticketed, and whether held indoors or outdoors.
County Reinforces Emergency Preparedness
According to the governor, the move strengthens security and emergency planning during the festive season. He added that counties have constitutional duties that cover cultural activities, public entertainment, public amenities, and disaster management.
