19km Rusinga Ring Road Completed, Transforming Island Trade

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has completed the 19km Rusinga Ring Road, which circles the island’s shoreline. The project is already transforming Rusinga Island’s economy even before its official commissioning.

Government Confirms Project Impact

During his visit to Homa Bay on December 9, Deputy Chief of Staff Eliud Owalo said the road is reshaping the region’s economic prospects. He also noted that the project is the island’s first tarmac road.

Road Expected to Improve Trade and Transport

The KSh 1.3 billion loop will ease movement for fisherfolk across multiple beaches. Consequently, families will reduce post-harvest losses and increase their incomes through faster market access.

Tourism Sector to Benefit Greatly

Moreover, Owalo said the road will boost tourism by showcasing Rusinga’s scenic beaches and rich fish stocks. He added that the road will also increase visits to nearby Ruma National Park.

Part of a Larger Lake Victoria Road Network

Additionally, the Rusinga Ring Road forms part of the 480km Lake Victoria ring-road corridor. This network seeks to expand trade, mobility, and economic activity across the lake region.

Team Reviews Other Ongoing Projects

Owalo’s team also inspected several infrastructure projects aimed at creating jobs. The KSh 216 million Kabunde Airstrip runway upgrade is 65% complete and will improve air connectivity in the region.

Rural Roads Under Construction

Furthermore, the delegation reviewed the 67km Kadel-Alara-Pala-Kanyadhiang-Kilusi-Opanga-Ramba roads in Rachuonyo West. The KSh 4 billion KeRRA project stands at 7% progress and will improve access to markets, schools, and health centres.
