KeNHA Orders Demolition of Roadside Structures

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has ordered the removal of roadside developments along Mombasa Road.
Moreover, the directive covers the 27-kilometre stretch from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to James Gichuru Junction.

Notice Issued to Roadside Operators
In a notice dated January 13, 2026, KeNHA directed owners to dismantle billboards, nursery beds, and temporary structures.
Additionally, the Authority gave operators two weeks to comply with the order.

KeNHA emphasized that the directive aims to pave the way for landscaping, beautification, and capacity enhancement works.
Failure to comply, the Authority warned, would result in structures being removed without owners’ consent.

Partnership with Chinese Contractors
The update comes three weeks after KeNHA handed over renovation works to the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).
Furthermore, KeNHA conducted a site inspection on December 19, 2025, led by Director of Maintenance Ezekiel Fukwo.

Technical teams from KeNHA and CRBC contractors supported the inspection, ensuring readiness for the multi-million-shilling project.
The Authority confirmed the project will include infrastructure upgrades and safety improvements beyond beautification efforts.

Sustainable Designs and Future Benefits
KeNHA stated the beautification works will integrate environmentally sustainable designs to protect the surrounding ecosystem.
Moreover, the project aims to improve the highway’s visual appeal while enhancing safety and user experience.

Upon completion, the initiative is expected to promote environmental sustainability and modernize infrastructure standards.
Consequently, the project will significantly boost Nairobi’s aesthetic appeal and strengthen Kenya’s transport network.

KeNHA reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable highways for all road users.
