Kenya Railways Suspends Limuru Commuter Train Service
Temporary Suspension Announced
Kenya Railways has temporarily suspended the Limuru Commuter Train service, disrupting travel between Nairobi Central Station and Limuru. Moreover, the corporation issued a notice on Thursday, January 8, confirming that the service will not operate on Friday, January 9, 2026.
Kenya Railways attributed the suspension to unavoidable circumstances, though it did not specify the exact cause. Consequently, thousands of passengers who rely on the train for daily travel will face inconvenience.
Impact on Commuters
The Limuru commuter train operates under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, running morning and evening schedules. Additionally, it ferries thousands of passengers daily between Limuru and Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The sudden suspension is expected to affect workers, students, and residents who depend on the service for reliable transport. Unlike matatus or buses, commuter trains provide faster, safer, and cheaper travel, helping commuters bypass Nairobi’s persistent traffic congestion. Therefore, the disruption comes at a critical time as Kenyans resume normal routines after the festive season.
Services to Resume Soon
Kenya Railways reassured passengers that the interruption is temporary. Furthermore, the corporation confirmed that regular services on the Nairobi–Limuru route will resume on Monday, January 12, 2026.
In a notice signed by Managing Director Philip Mainga, the corporation expressed regret over the inconvenience caused. Consequently, passengers were urged to make alternative travel arrangements during the suspension period.
Ultimately, the announcement emphasized Kenya Railways’ commitment to providing safe and efficient transport for Nairobi commuters.
