Maraga Calls for Suspension of Competency-Based Education

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called for the suspension of the Competency-Based Education system.
He cited serious infrastructural gaps and widespread system failure across public schools. Moreover, Maraga argued that the current education model no longer serves learners effectively.
He warned that continued implementation could worsen inequality within the education sector.

Former CJ Says CBE Overburdens Parents and Learners

Additionally, Maraga said the system has placed excessive financial pressure on parents.
He noted that families now shoulder costs previously covered by the state. Consequently, many learners struggle to access learning materials and assessments.

Maraga also observed that teachers remain overstretched due to inadequate training and resources.
As a result, learning outcomes continue to decline in several regions.

Stakeholder Engagement Key to Education Reform

Furthermore, the United Green Movement party leader faulted the government for limited public participation.
He said authorities introduced CBE without proper consultations with key education stakeholders. Accordingly, Maraga urged the government to involve parents, teachers, and education experts.

He stressed that inclusive dialogue would help design a system that works for all learners.
In his view, reforms must prioritise equity, sustainability, and learner welfare.

Maraga Faults Kenya Kwanza Over Transition Challenges

Meanwhile, Maraga accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to manage student transitions.
He argued that gaps persist between different education levels under the new system. Consequently, learners face confusion, stress, and uncertainty during academic progression.

Maraga said the government must admit mistakes and correct them urgently.
Ultimately, he called for a comprehensive review to create an education system that leaves no child behind.
