Night Demolition Clears Land Near Nyayo Stadium
Several businesses worth millions were demolished overnight on Wednesday, January 14, near Nyayo National Stadium.
Consequently, authorities said the operation aimed to clear land for a major transport infrastructure project.
Bulldozers Roll In Under Heavy Police Presence
Shortly after midnight, bulldozers and excavators moved in and flattened structures within hours.
Meanwhile, police officers sealed off the area and supervised the operation to prevent disruptions.
Businesses and Vehicles Destroyed
The demolitions affected car yards, restaurants, car wash facilities, and other commercial premises.
Additionally, several vehicles parked within the compounds were destroyed during the exercise.
Protests Erupt as Traders Count Losses
As the operation continued, some traders attempted to protest by burning tyres on the road.
However, police quickly dispersed the crowds and restored order.
One trader claimed losses exceeding KSh4 million after receiving no prior demolition notice.
Train Station Project Sparks Fresh Concerns
According to officials, the cleared land will host a new train station linking the CBD, Nyayo, and Talanta Stadium.
Nevertheless, similar demolitions in 2019 and Ngara have raised concerns over compensation and livelihoods.
