Carrick Named Man United Interim Coach as Holland Joins Staff
Michael Carrick has agreed to take over as Manchester United’s interim head coach. Former England assistant manager Steve Holland will serve as his deputy.
Carrick finalised the deal on Monday night. The club will confirm the appointment on Tuesday after completing paperwork.
Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion will also join the coaching staff.
United sacked Ruben Amorim on January 5 after 14 months in charge. Darren Fletcher stepped in as caretaker for two matches.
Carrick will take charge on Saturday. United host Manchester City in the Premier League derby at Old Trafford.
This is Carrick’s second spell as interim boss. He previously led the team for three matches in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left.
Holland adds strong international experience. He worked under Gareth Southgate with England.
During that period, England finished fourth at the 2018 World Cup. They also reached the Euro finals in 2021 and 2024.
Earlier, Holland enjoyed successful spells at Chelsea. He worked under several managers at the club.
However, Yokohama F Marinos dismissed him in April. He had spent only four months in charge.

Woodgate reunites with Carrick after their time at Middlesbrough. The pair worked closely together there.
He also shares a past with United football director Jason Wilcox. They played together at Leeds United.
Woodgate managed Middlesbrough between 2019 and 2020. He later had a short spell at Bournemouth in 2021.
Former United defender Jonny Evans returns to Old Trafford as part of the staff. Travis Binnion remains in his current coaching role.
Carrick held face-to-face talks with United officials last Thursday. He impressed chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox.
He plans to use a 4-2-3-1 formation. This marks a shift from Amorim’s three-man defence.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also held talks with the club. However, United preferred Carrick for his hands-on approach.
Meanwhile, Fletcher will return to the Under-18s. He led the senior team against Burnley and Brighton.
United view Fletcher as a long-term figure. Both sides agreed the move would aid his development.
Club officials believe the new coaching setup offers balance. They expect it to steady the team for the rest of the season.
