CS Murkomen Joins Kenya–Tanzania Banter as CHAN Quarter-Finals Loom

CS Murkomen has become the latest high-profile figure to wade into the playful football rivalry between Kenya and Tanzania. This escalates ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals.

The banter, which has dominated social media, has grown more intense after both co-hosts booked places in the last eight.

Kenya will face Madagascar at Kasarani Stadium on Friday from 3pm. Tanzania take on two-time champions Morocco at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium at 8pm EAT. Morocco who finished second behind Kenya, are widely viewed as stern challenge for the Neighbours spicing up the contest.

Reports circulating online suggest that some Kenyan supporters have cheekily bought tickets for the Tanzania Vs Morocco clash. This is not to cheer on their neighbors, but to back Morocco. Kenyans believe this will reduce the number of seats available for Tanzanian fans.

CS Murkomen has sparked a buzz after Speaking on Wednesday during a fundraiser for Kenyan Premier League side APS Bomet. Murkomen weighed in with a tongue-in-cheek response.

“I congratulate all Kenyans who have bought Tanzanian tickets,” the CS said. “Please make sure you travel and go support Morocco at Benjamin Mkapa. I enjoy the banter between us, Uganda, and Tanzania, but if they continue making fun of us the way they have, I’ll be very happy if it ends up being Kenya versus Tanzania in the finals in Nairobi. Just imagine!”

Murkomen added a Kiswahili twist to his remarks, joking that if the dream East African final happens, “Tutacheza kwa Kingereza, game yetu”—a quip that quickly lit up social media and fueled the banter further.

Across the region, supporters have continued to trade memes, playful digs, and bold predictions, turning CHAN 2024 into not only a football spectacle but also a showcase of East African pride and humor.

With the quarter-finals kicking off this weekend, all eyes now turn to the pitch. Whether Kenya and Tanzania will meet in the dream final remains to be seen. For now the banter is proving just as fierce as the football.
